In this blog, we will learn about ‘Requests’. Let us learn the ways to request. We would look at the words, phrases and expressions that we use to request somebody.
Why do we Request? | The reasons to request somebody.
We generally have two reasons to request.
1. When we need something that we don’t possess.
When we wish to use some object, article or a thing like a pen to write, a phone to make a call, a vehicle to go to a place or something else that you are in need of, we request (ask) the other person to give it.
2. When we are unable to do something on our own, we request others to do it for us.
When you are in a position where you cannot do something by yourself or when the other person is good at doing something better than you, you request(ask) the other to do it for you.
What words do we use to request?
We generally use ‘can, could’ or sometimes ‘will’ to ask somebody either to give us something or to do something for us.
We also use the expressions like ‘ If you don’t mind …..’ Or ‘would you mind ……’ to request somebody either to give us something or to do something for us.
Under a certain situation, we use the expression ‘ I wonder if you could……..’ too to ask somebody either to give us something or to do something for us.
Apart from these expressions, we use the expressions mentioned below only to request the others to give you something in the form of an object.
1. Can I have…….
2. Could I have……..
As we have discussed about the ways to request, let us look at the practical use of these Modal verbs and expressions one by one with some examples, now.
When someone uses the expression “can I have,” they are typically making a request for something. For example, “Can I have a glass of water?” or “Can I have the keys to the car?” The person using this phrase is asking for permission or if it is possible for them to have the item or service they are mentioning.
